Paragraph Writing
We are just finishing our paragraphs. Our final summative assignment is now posted below, along with a revised checklist and rubric. I have left the original paragraph/nonfiction checklist and rubric with a more detailed jot note section. These helped students complete a summative paragraph (pre-jot notes) along with a labelled diagram and glossary based on their paragraph.

Critical Thinking - Good Friends
Students recently worked together to come up with Room 12's Criteria of a Good Friend. We are using this criteria to judge whether or not characters of books we are reading are true friends. Using this criteria, students will make an informed judgement and then defend their opinion using the criteria and examples from the story.

Health - Substance Use and Abuse
Students are currently working on a Media/Health assignment. In pairs or individually, students are working to recreate past Tobacco Ads (grade 4) or more current Alcohol Ads (grade 5). Students will recreate the ad with a similar graphic and feel, but will replace the sell message with a message about potential side effects of either tobacco or alcohol. Students are having a lot of fun and being very creative with this project!

Summary Writing - Including final project
Writing a summary can be difficult for students. Deciding on a main idea and narrowing things down to important supporting details are hard
skills to master. In the next few weeks, we will be focusing on summarizing narrative texts. Below you will find the graphic organizer we will be using to
help us with this learning cycle. Please ask your child to summarize his or her reading to you from time to time, with a focus on the items included on this graphic organizer.

Self Selected Social Purpose Writing
In this writing unit, students will be given a choice of the purpose, audience and form of their writing. Students will be assessed on their idea generation, purpose and audience and sentence fluency. I may add a revision component later on! Students are LOVING begin given the choice! I am including the PAF slip students must fill out before beginning their writing, a document containing different writing types and their purpose and features which we brainstormed together as a class, as well as a rubric (subject to change at this point :)). I will add more pictures of our exemplars and anchor charts in the week coming.

Recount Writing
Students have been hard at work writing drafts recounting past events in their lives which demonstrate certain character traits. Below, please find the rubric for this writing type, as well as student friendly success criteria and learning goal and Features of a WOW recount - a co-created anchor chart in our room. Though this rubric will guide the writing, students are free to write in the form they wish - newspaper articles, song lyrics etc - as long as they include the criteria on the rubric. We hope to create an anthology to send home at the end of this learning cycle!
